Debra Patt: The Power of Advocacy in Transforming Cancer Care
Debra Patt, Chair of the AI Task Force and a Board Member for the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), shared a post on LinkedIn:
“The Power of Advocacy in Transforming Cancer Care
Advocacy plays a crucial role in shaping the future of cancer care in the United States. Educating our elected officials and their staff about the real-world barriers patients face is essential to driving policy changes that ensure every American has access to high-quality, equitable cancer treatment.
When policymakers understand the challenges – whether it’s limited access to specialized care, insurance hurdles, or affordability issues—they are better equipped to champion reforms that make a difference. That’s why community efforts, like those led by the Community Oncology Alliance (COA), are vital. COA drives policy change and recently published the prescription for healthcare reform we presented in February of this year.
Recently, COA representatives, including many The US Oncology Network, Oncology leaders and Texas Oncology patients, went to Capitol Hill to share their stories and insights. Our providers and patients advocated for policies that remove barriers and support innovative, patient-centered cancer care. Their voices help shape legislation that prioritizes access, affordability, and quality.
Together, through advocacy and collaboration, we can push for transformative policy changes that bring about a future where every cancer patient receives the care they deserve. It’s not just about policy – it’s about saving lives.”
