Charles Jiang Shared Top Tips for First-Time Trainees at ASCO25
Charles Jiang, Medical Oncologist at UT Southwestern, shared a post on X:
“Heading to ASCO25 for the first time as a trainee? It can be overwhelming but also incredibly rewarding! Here’s some honest advice I wish I’d had as a resident/fellow.
What are YOUR top tips for first-timers? Share and RT!
Your 1st ASCO25? It’s a marathon, not a sprint! You won’t see everything. Prioritize 2-3 key sessions daily aligning with YOUR interests/research, not just the “big” plenaries. Your energy and focus are finite
The Trainee Lounge (ASCO) is your friend. Free coffee, yes, but it’s a lower-pressure zone to actually TALK to peers and potential mentors. Don’t just grab caffeine and run. Linger, chat. Connections happen here!
FOMO is real at ASCO25, but resist trying to cram in only talks. Networking isn’t just a buzzword. The connections you make over a poster or in a queue can be more career-defining than that 10th lecture on a Tuesday. Seriously.
Honestly, some of the best science and discussions happen at the posters. Block out dedicated time to walk through them, especially in your niche. It’s where you can really discuss methods and early ideas with researchers.
Don’t be afraid to introduce yourself to speakers/authors you admire at ASCO25, but be strategic. Post-talk scrums are tough. A polite email beforehand or a thoughtful question at a smaller session/poster works much better.
It’s absolutely okay to step out and recharge. McCormick Place is HUGE and can be overwhelming. Take breaks, grab fresh air, stay hydrated. Burnout is NOT a badge of honor. Process what you’re learning. Enjoy Chicago a bit if you can!
What other “real talk” advice would you give a first-time ASCO25 trainee? Share your wisdom below! Let’s help each other make the most of it.
