“Celebrating Our 2026 AIMS Summer Scholars!
This week, 11 outstanding young women from tribal and rural communities across North Carolina called Wake Forest University home as participants in the Academy for Immersion in Medicine and Science (AIMS) Summer Scholars Program.
Throughout the week, these future leaders engaged in hands-on experiences that introduced them to careers in medicine, biomedical science, research, and public health. They explored groundbreaking innovations at the Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine (WFIRM), connected with faculty and staff from the Wake Forest University School of Medicine, learned about cancer research and community impact through the Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Comprehensive Cancer Center, and gained valuable insights from our partners at the Southeastern American Indian Cancer Health Equity Partnership (SAICEP).
We were also honored to welcome Miss North Carolina, who joined the scholars for dinner and shared an inspiring message about leadership and serving with a purpose.
One of the highlights of the week was the scholars’ Problem-Based Learning (PBL) case study, where teams analyzed a complex patient scenario involving vaping and health outcomes and developed evidence-based recommendations. The week culminated at the annual AIMS Faculty Dinner, where scholars confidently presented their findings to faculty, staff, and supporters, demonstrating scientific curiosity, critical thinking, professionalism, and teamwork.
The evening began with welcoming remarks from Dr. Nadine Barrett, Director of the Office of Community Outreach and Engagement at the Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Comprehensive Cancer Center, who shared her personal journey and encouraged students to embrace challenges, persevere through obstacles, and use their talents to positively impact their communities.
A heartfelt thank you to the dedicated COE staff, faculty, and partners from the Wake Forest University School of Medicine, WFIRM, SAICEP, and the Comprehensive Cancer Center for investing your time, expertise, and mentorship to create such a meaningful experience.
