Sachin H. Jain: One of the biggest mistakes I see leaders make is misreading the motivations of their employees
Sachin H. Jain, President and CEO of Scan Group and Health Plan, shared on LinkedIn:
“One of the biggest mistakes I see leaders make is misreading the motivations of their employees.
Some examples:
1) talking to employees about the stock price when many (if not most) don’t own stock and could care less about its price
2) assuming people are at the company for the “mission” when what they really want is a good well-paying job and to be valued for what they do
3) assuming people want career growth and a different position when they really love the job they have and want to continue to excel at it
(I made more than a few of these mistakes earlier in my career)
So much of our role as leaders is to truly “see” people—not for who we want them to be, but for who they are.
Best not to project our own motivations on to others whose motivations may be different (not better or worse) from our own. ”
