Dr. Miriam Mutebi is a Consultant Breast Surgical Oncologist and Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at the Aga Khan University Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya. She is also a clinical epidemiologist and health systems researcher with a focus on understanding barriers to cancer access for women in Sub-Saharan Africa and designing interventions to mitigate those barriers. She is the recipient of the ASCO 2024 Humanitarian Award, recognizing her outstanding patient care, innovative practice, and exceptional leadership.

  • Graduate Surgical Oncology Research Fellow at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York, where she focused on understanding and addressing barriers to cancer diagnosis and treatment for women in Africa and designing interventions to mitigate these barriers.

  • Development of NCCN Harmonized Guidelines for Sub-Saharan Africa through the African Cancer Coalition.
  • Cancer terminology and communication in African languages.
  • Active commissioner on 5 Lancet Commissions, including Women, Power and Cancer; Cancer in Sub-Saharan Africa; and Breast Cancer.
  • Faculty development barriers and enablers among African oncology faculty.
  • Global cancer surgery inequities and solutions for improving surgical oncology outcomes in low-resource settings.
