Dr. Maite Gorostegui Obanos is a pediatric oncologist with more than fifteen years of international experience dedicated to the care of children and adolescents with cancer. She currently works at the Pediatric Cancer Center Barcelona at Hospital Sant Joan de Déu, where she is a key member of the Extracranial Solid Tumors Team and serves as the Director of Academic Affairs. Her clinical and research interests focus on neuroblastoma, malignant germ cell tumors, renal tumors, and rare pediatric tumors, with a strong commitment to advancing treatment options for refractory or relapsed disease.
Her career has been shaped by extensive international training and practice across leading pediatric oncology centers. After earning her medical degree summa cum laude from Universidad de los Andes, she completed a pediatrics residency at Universidad de Concepción and pursued pediatric hematology-oncology fellowships at Hospital Vall d’Hebron in Barcelona and Charité – Virchow Klinikum in Berlin. She further strengthened her academic foundation through clinical research training at Universidad de Chile and simulation instruction at Boston Children’s Hospital and Hospital Sant Joan de Déu.
Dr. Gorostegui has held clinical and leadership roles in Chile, Germany, and Spain, including positions at Clínica Las Condes, Hospital Clínico Universidad de Chile, Clínica Dávila, and University Hospital Regensburg. These experiences have enriched her global perspective on pediatric cancer care and deepened her commitment to equity in health.
Beyond her clinical practice, she plays an active role in global pediatric oncology initiatives. She is the Chair of the SIOP Global Mapping Programme and co-leads the Hereditary and Rare Tumors Group for Latin America through the Cure4Kids platform. She is also the medical co-director of TELEO, an educational platform supporting pediatric oncology training across Latin America. Her commitment to global health extends to her involvement in international projects aimed at improving cancer care in low-income countries, including efforts to support St. John of God Hospital in Lunsar, Sierra Leone. Dr. Gorostegui also contributes to academic governance and ethical oversight as a member of the Clinical Research Ethics Committee at the Fundació de Recerca Sant Joan de Déu and serves on the Editorial Board of OncoDaily.
Throughout her career, she has remained deeply motivated by the bonds she forms with her patients and their families, believing that excellence in pediatric oncology requires not only scientific rigor and ongoing education but also empathy, communication, and a collaborative spirit.
