Guillermo Chantada MD, PhD, is a pediatric oncologist and hematologist at the Pediatric Cancer Center Barcelona, Hospital Sant Joan de Déu Barcelona, where he coordinates the research and treatment group for retinoblastoma within the Oncology and Hematology Service. An internationally recognized expert in pediatric oncology, Dr. Chantada’s primary research interests include retinoblastoma, neuroblastoma, lymphomas, and histiocytosis.
He received his Bachelor of Medicine in 1988 and Doctor of Medicine degree in 2013 from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Buenos Aires (UBA), Argentina. He specialized in Hematology and Oncology in 2001 at Garrahan Hospital, Buenos Aires. His international experience includes clinical and research positions at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (New York, USA), Hannover Medical School (Germany), and a research fellowship supported by the Fund for Ophthalmic Knowledge at Memorial Sloan Kettering and New York Presbyterian Hospital (2002).
Since 2013, Dr. Chantada has been part of the medical team at SJD Barcelona Children’s Hospital, contributing to the hospital’s international leadership in pediatric oncology. In 2006, he joined the International Outreach Program at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (Memphis, USA), where he currently serves as Editor-in-Chief of Oncopedia, St. Jude’s educational website dedicated to global pediatric oncology knowledge dissemination.
Dr. Chantada has been an active member of the International Society of Paediatric Oncology (SIOP) since 1997 and has served as its President since May 2021. He is also a member of the International Society for Genetic Eye Diseases and Retinoblastoma (ISGEDR) since 1998, the International Children’s Oncology Group since 2009, and the International Society of Ocular Oncology (ISOO).
He has participated in numerous national and international conferences and congresses, earning multiple awards for his scientific and educational contributions. A prolific author and reviewer, Dr. Chantada has published more than 60 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters in leading international journals, including JAMA Ophthalmology, Journal of Controlled Release, and Cancer Letters. His work has significantly advanced the understanding and management of retinoblastoma and related pediatric malignancies worldwide.
Among his notable publications are Treatment of Nonmetastatic Unilateral Retinoblastoma in Children (JAMA Ophthalmol, 2018), Increased Delivery of Chemotherapy to the Vitreous by Inhibition of the Blood-Retinal Barrier (J Control Release, 2017), and Treatment of Retinoblastoma in 2015: Agreement and Disagreement (JAMA Ophthalmol, 2015).
Dr. Chantada is widely regarded as one of the foremost authorities in pediatric retinoblastoma and a global leader in collaborative childhood cancer research and education.
