Dr. Enrique Soto Pérez de Celis is an internationally recognized geriatric oncologist whose career has been dedicated to advancing cancer care for older adults and reducing global disparities in oncology. He currently serves as Associate Professor of Medical Oncology and Associate Director for Global Oncology at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. His research and clinical leadership focus on improving outcomes for older adults with cancer, particularly those from racial and ethnic minority groups who face structural barriers to care.
Dr. Soto leads the Cancer Care in the Older Adult Clinic at the Instituto Nacional de Ciencias Médicas y Nutrición Salvador Zubirán (INCMNSZ) in Mexico City—the first multidisciplinary geriatric oncology clinic in Mexico and Latin America, which he established and developed between 2017 and 2024. He is a Level 3 member of the National System of Researchers of Mexico and previously served on the Board of Directors of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO).
He completed his residency in Internal Medicine and fellowship in Medical Oncology at INCMNSZ, followed by a master’s degree and PhD in Medical Science from the National Autonomous University of Mexico. In 2017, Dr. Soto was awarded the prestigious Conquer Cancer Long-Term International Fellowship (LIFE), enabling him to train under Dr. Arti Hurria at the Center for Cancer and Aging at City of Hope, where he completed advanced postgraduate training in geriatric oncology.
Dr. Soto’s research program addresses the intersection of aging, cancer, and social inequities. His work explores the use of mobile health technologies to monitor older adults undergoing systemic therapy, determinants of treatment adherence, and global inequalities in cancer outcomes. He has contributed to multiple Lancet Oncology Commissions, including those on China, India, Russia, Latin America, and the landmark Women, Power, and Cancer Commission. He also played a key role in the development of ASCO Resource-Stratified Guidelines for Geriatric Oncology and the International Society of Geriatric Oncology (SIOG) guidelines for breast cancer in older adults.
Dr. Soto has authored more than 160 peer-reviewed publications, is a Level F researcher in medical sciences, and has received numerous national and international honors, including the ASCO Young Investigator Award (2015), the LIFE Award (2016), and the Conquer Cancer Career Development Award (2019). In 2024, he joined the University of Colorado Cancer Center, where he continues to build global oncology collaborations and advance research supporting vulnerable older cancer populations.
His ongoing Conquer Cancer–supported research focuses on understanding the unique obstacles faced by older adults from minority backgrounds with breast cancer, with the goal of improving treatment completion and developing patient-centered supportive care strategies.
