University Children’s Hospital Freiburg,

Germany, Freiburg

Dr. Alexandra Müller is a physician-scientist specializing in pediatrics with advanced clinical training in pediatric hematology and oncology. Her career is dedicated to improving cancer care for children living in fragile settings, where conflict, displacement, and disrupted health systems create profound barriers to treatment. After completing her pediatric hematology-oncology fellowship at the University of Freiburg Medical Center, she became a senior consultant and co-lead of the Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Outpatient Clinic at the University Children’s Hospital in Freiburg in May 2024.

Since May 2022, Dr. Müller has also served as the medical director of the SAFER Ukraine collaborative, an international emergency response initiative launched by St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital to support pediatric cancer patients affected by the war in Ukraine. In this role, she has helped design and implement a standardized two-step triage and evacuation pathway, establishing a dedicated triage hub in Poland and overseeing the international referral and treatment coordination for more than 1,700 displaced children with cancer. Her leadership has been central to creating a scalable, safe, and rapid model for oncology care in humanitarian crises.

Her research focuses on strengthening pediatric cancer care in fragile and crisis-affected environments. She leads the FOCUS Study (Following Outcomes of Children with Catastrophic Disease in Ukraine), an international longitudinal project conducted across 10 countries to assess the long-term impact of war on pediatric oncology outcomes and to inform crisis-adapted models of care. Dr. Müller also heads the development of the SAFER Toolkit, a comprehensive framework for emergency cancer care in humanitarian settings that informed the emergency oncology response for children in Gaza in October 2023.

In recognition of her pioneering work, Dr. Müller joined the Board of Directors of the Institute of Cancer and Crisis (ICC) in 2024, where she contributes to shaping global policy, research, and capacity-building in crisis oncology. She is also an active member of the World Health Organization’s Cancer in Crisis Network, supporting international efforts to integrate cancer care into emergency response systems.

Driven by a deep commitment to vulnerable children and their families, Dr. Müller continues to expand her expertise through the Master of Global Child Health program, strengthening the skills needed to lead sustainable improvements in crisis-responsive oncology care. Originally from Mönchengladbach, Germany, she remains dedicated to advancing global health equity and ensuring that children with cancer receive safe, timely, and dignified care—regardless of geography or circumstance.

She is a Member of the Editorial Board of OncoDaily.
