Gustave Roussy has been ranked the leading cancer center in Europe and the third-best oncology hospital worldwide in Newsweek’s World’s Best Specialized Hospitals 2027 ranking.
Released on September 17, 2026, the annual ranking places the French cancer center behind only Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York and MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, while maintaining Gustave Roussy’s position as the highest-ranked oncology institution in France and Europe.
Newsweek, in partnership with Statista, developed the ranking by evaluating specialized hospitals worldwide across multiple medical fields, including oncology.
How the Newsweek Ranking Is Determined
The World’s Best Specialized Hospitals ranking combines several measures of hospital performance and reputation.
According to Gustave Roussy, the 2027 ranking draws on an online survey involving tens of thousands of medical experts, internationally recognized hospital accreditations and certifications, and patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs).
The methodology is intended to capture both professional recognition of specialist institutions and indicators related to quality of care and patients’ experiences.

More Than 54,000 Patients Treated in 2025
Gustave Roussy attributes its position among the world’s leading oncology centers in part to its model integrating cancer care with research and therapeutic innovation.
In 2025, the Institute cared for more than 54,000 patients, including approximately 2,800 children and adolescents.
Clinical research also plays a significant role in the institution’s model. According to Gustave Roussy, 40.5% of patients were enrolled in a clinical study. In contrast, more than 900 patients gained early access to innovative therapies through DITEP, its Department of Therapeutic Innovation and Early Trials.
The Institute brings clinicians, researchers and other healthcare professionals together to investigate the biological mechanisms underlying cancer, identify new therapeutic targets and translate scientific discoveries into potential new treatments.
New Medical-Scientific Programs
Gustave Roussy is also expanding its research strategy through four new medical-scientific programs: PancDEMIC, Cell-ATTACK, DECRIPT and INSPIRE.
The programs address major areas of oncology research, including pancreatic cancer, pediatric cancers and innovative cell therapies.
They are designed to bring research and clinical teams together while combining fundamental and translational research, early-phase clinical trials, advanced technological platforms and industrial development within the same institutional environment.
Looking Toward 2030
The ranking comes as Gustave Roussy implements its 2026–2030 institutional strategy.
Over the next five years, the Institute plans to further develop individualized treatment pathways, strengthen research with direct potential impact for patients, and expand the use of digital technologies and artificial intelligence across cancer research and care.
Commenting on the recognition, Barlesi emphasized that the ranking represents a platform for further development rather than an endpoint.
“This ranking is not an achievement in itself, but a foundation from which to accelerate innovation for the benefit of every patient we care for.”

The 2027 ranking places institutions from the United States, France, the United Kingdom, South Korea, and Germany within oncology’s global top 10, with Gustave Roussy and The Royal Marsden representing Europe within the top four.
For Gustave Roussy, the third-place position once again puts the French institution among the world’s highest-ranked specialized cancer centers and at the top of the European oncology landscape.
