Building a new cancer center in Ghana

The Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Comprehensive Cancer Center of Excellence is a new stand-alone cancer facility being developed in Kwaso, near Kumasi, in Ghana’s Ashanti Region.

The Center is designed to bring comprehensive cancer services under one roof, spanning prevention and screening, diagnosis, treatment, research and innovation, education and training, supportive and palliative care, rehabilitation and survivorship.

According to the Center, the overall project represents an estimated $100 million investment and will be developed in phases. Phase One, estimated at $10 million, is planned to include clinical services, a radiotherapy suite, a research wing, an AI Hub, an education center, and community outreach programs.

The project comes amid a substantial cancer burden in Ghana. According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer’s GLOBOCAN 2022 estimates, 27,385 new cancer cases and 17,944 cancer deaths occurred in Ghana in 2022.

His Royal Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II is the 16th Asantehene, King of the Asante, and has occupied the Golden Stool since April 26, 1999. His leadership has included initiatives focused on health, education, and socioeconomic development.

As Patron of the OOTII CCCoE, he is supporting an initiative intended to strengthen access to comprehensive cancer care in Ghana and the wider region.

The September fundraising gala will support efforts to bring the new Center closer to opening its doors.
