Cristiane Bergerot: Exploring Cancer-Related Discrimination

Cristiane Bergerot, Research Consultant at City of Hope, shared on LinkedIn:

“An important paper recently published in Psycho-Oncology.

Cancer-related discrimination is not limited to interpersonal stigma; it can be embedded within workplaces, healthcare, insurance and welfare systems.

This scoping review of 116 studies highlights how discrimination can affect psychological well-being, financial security, care-seeking, and quality of life, and reinforces the need for responses that extend beyond the individual to institutions, policy, and law.

An important contribution to how we think about equity and supportive cancer care.”

Raymond Chan, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research at Flinders University, added:

“This work is the first to comprehensively articulate and synthesize the literature on cancer-related discrimination. It is an issue that many people affected by cancer experience, yet one that is rarely discussed or addressed. When we do not talk about discrimination, we fail to understand its impact on patients and those around them.

Dr. Seyi (Andi) A. from Flinders University Live Well Cancer Research Centre is dedicating her Cancer Council SA Fellowship to a significant program of original research that will explore how people affected by cancer experience discrimination, not only in the workplace but across the broader social systems that shape their lives. This important work will help bring visibility to an often-overlooked issue and contribute to more equitable and supportive experiences for people living with and beyond cancer.”
