Stephanie Graff: “Nailing down” risk and improving outcomes in early-stage breast cancer
Stephanie Graff, Director of Breast Oncology at Brown University Health, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent paper by him and colleagues published in Journal of the National Cancer Institute:
“An honor to pen this editorial in response to ‘Trends in breast cancer specific death by clinical stage at diagnoses between 2000-2017’ by Michal Marczyk et al. in Journal of the National Cancer Institute 2024 with Stacey Tinianov, MPH, BCPA and Dr. Kevin Kalinsky.
Marczyk shows ‘Patients with stage I/II breast cancers have excellent prognosis, yet these cancers account for over 60% of current BCSD because of their large absolute numbers. To further reduce breast cancer death strategies are needed to identify and treat patients with stage I/II disease who remain at risk for recurrence.’
We echo ‘For generations, physicians, patients, and the public have received messaging that early-stage breast cancer is low-risk for premature death… Yet, despite a 40% reduction in breast cancer mortality in a similar timeframe, the risk of breast cancer-specific death has increased only for patients with the earliest-stage disease.’ Read our full editorial below and at JNCI.
Looking forward to seeing advances in early-stage disease, risk stratification, and biomarker development at San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium 2024″
