Patricia Falconer: Metastatic cancer patients’ report on Financial Toxicity

Patricia Falconer, Cancer Services Strategy and Healthcare Leader at Health Options, shared on LinkedIn:

“Metastatic cancer patients report Financial Toxicity:

Cancer Support Community Cancer Experience Registry data identified 484 individuals with metastatic cancer who competed the COST survey. The most common cancers were metastatic breast (31%), lung (13%), gynecologic (10%), and colorectal (9%). One-half reported some degree of FT. Individuals less than one year since their cancer diagnosis and those who reported lower income or less education had greater odds of reporting FT.

Individuals with any level of FT were more likely to report postponing medical visits, suboptimal medication adherence, and delaying supportive care and/or psychosocial support services compared to those without FT.

We can do better.

With an estimated 19 million U.S. cancer survivors in 2024, improvements in overall long-term survivorship for individuals with metastatic disease, and the rising costs of treatment, providers must systematically screen and intervene to prevent and mitigate FT for cancer survivors and their families.”
