‘Why is federal research funding so important? Won’t industry step in and continue to drive research forward?’
The reality is we can’t count on industry alone to answer every important question.
Federal funding for the NIH and NCI supports the basic science that powers innovation in oncology.
It funds the emerging ideas that eventually become tomorrow’s breakthroughs.
It also makes possible the kinds of clinical trials that industry isn’t always positioned to lead-research on prevention and early detection, rare and pediatric cancers, and studies that compare treatments or explore whether patients can safely receive less treatment.
Oncologists see the result of that work every day in their clinics. Continued progress depends on continued investment in the research that makes progress possible.
