“Jean-Yves Blay is starting a new mandate!

Director General of the Léon Bérard Centre since 1 December 2014, Professor Jean-Yves Blay is starting his 3rd term at the head of the Lyon and Rhône-Alpes Cancer Centre. He was renewed in his position for 5 years, by ministerial decree published on October 31.

Medical oncologist and researcher, Jean-Yves Blay is an internationally recognized expert in the management of sarcomas. He is also one of the few French cancer researchers and clinicians who are once again included this year in the 2024 Clarivate Ranking of the most cited researchers in the world, ‘Highly Cited Researchers.’

Jean-Yves Blay has also been president of Unicancer, the network of French cancer centers, since October 2019.

He is currently Director of Public Policy at the European Society of Medical Oncology, ESMO – European Society for Medical Oncology, (2023-2024).”

Professor Jean-Yves Blay, MD, PhD, is a medical oncologist and General Director of the Centre Léon Bérard, Lyon’s Comprehensive Cancer Centre, since 2014. He is also a Professor of Medicine at the University Claude Bernard in Lyon and President of the French Federation of Cancer Centers, Unicancer, overseeing 18 Comprehensive Cancer Centers in France.

His research focuses on sarcoma, cancer genomics, targeted therapies, immuno-oncology, and the tumor microenvironment, aiming to improve diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment. He has led the French Sarcoma Group since 2005 and coordinates NETSARC+, the sarcoma reference network. He also directs EURACAN, the EU’s reference network for rare adult cancers, and LYRICAN, a cancer research program supported by INCA.

Professor Blay is Secretary of the World Sarcoma Network and serves on the ESMO Executive Board as Director of Public Policy. He has contributed to sarcoma clinical practice guidelines since 2005 and co-chaired the 2019 ESMO Congress. Previously, he was President of EORTC (2009–2012) and Principal Investigator for EU-funded projects, including Conticanet and EUROSARC.
