“Liquid biopsy: bringing precision medicine closer to patients
How can a simple blood sample transform the way we diagnose, monitor and treat cancer?
At the International Society of Liquid Biopsy (ISLB) Workshop in Pompeii this May, we had the opportunity to speak with Professor Catherine Alix-Panabières , Professor of Oncology at the University Medical Center of Montpellier and the Faculty of Medicine, and Visiting Professor at the University Medical Center of Hamburg.
A pioneer in the field, Professor Panabières co-coined the term ‘liquid biopsy’ in 2010 together with Professor Klaus Pantel.
In this short interview, she explains why liquid biopsy has become one of the most promising tools in precision medicine, offering new opportunities for earlier diagnosis, treatment selection, disease monitoring, and more personalised cancer care.
Drawing on more than 26 years of research, she also highlights another essential ingredient for progress: collaboration.
Advancing liquid biopsy from research into routine clinical practice will require harmonisation, shared standards, and close cooperation between researchers, clinicians, policymakers and healthcare systems across Europe.
