“ What a Remarkable Oncology Weekend!

Here’s a glimpse into a busy yet rewarding few days filled with meaningful work and inspiring moments:

Friday, 5 PM

– Concluded a packed 10-hour cancer clinic, evaluating over 50 oncology patients—30% of whom received free consultations.

Friday

– Attended the signing of an MOU between the UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention and AstraZeneca to advance lung cancer screening across the UAE.

Saturday Morning

– Conducted ICU rounds, caring for critically ill oncology patients at Burjeel Sharjah.

Saturday Afternoon

– Celebrated the resilience of over 20 breast cancer survivors during Burjeel Sharjah’s annual Pink October event. The atmosphere was unforgettable, filled with joy, emotional moments, and inspiring victory stories.

Saturday Evening

– Hosted another Pink October survivors event at the Mohamed Bin Rashid Library, featuring touching survivor stories and a laughter yoga session to cap off the evening.

Saturday Night

– Flew to Kuwait to participate in key events.

Sunday Morning

– Attended the Gulf Federation for Cancer Control’s smoking cessation conference and took part in the Gulf Cancer Society elections.

Sunday Evening

– Continued with the Gulf Federation and Cancer Society election activities.

Sunday, 11 PM

– Returned to Abu Dhabi, arriving at 2 AM.

Monday, 6:30 AM

– Kicked off the day with inpatient rounds, assessing 25-30 admitted patients, including those in the ICU.

Monday, 8-10 AM

– Participated in a GI multidisciplinary team (MDT) meeting, discussing over 20 cases to develop comprehensive, evidence-based treatment plans.

Monday, 10 AM – 6 PM

– at clinic for a full day at the GI Oncology Clinic, providing care to patients throughout the day.

It’s weekends like these that highlight the privilege of working with exceptional colleagues, patients, and survivors while advancing oncology care. Grateful for these opportunities and energized for the journey ahead !

Humaid Al-Shamsi

Prof. Humaid Al Shamsi is the Founder and Director of Medical Oncology at Burjeel Medical City. He serves as President of the Emirates Oncology Society and Adjunct Clinical Professor of Oncology at the University of Sharjah.

Prof. Humaid holds board certifications from the USA, Canada, and the UK in medical oncology and internal medicine. Recognized as the sole certified Gastrointestinal Oncologist in the UAE, his practice focuses on various solid tumors, including breast, colon, gastric, and lung cancers.

Additionally, he’s the first UAE national trained in palliative care, and he actively advises governmental committees to improve cancer care standards in the UAE and the region.
