“Understanding the Landscape of Cancer Care in Europe: Evaluating Clinical and Comprehensive Cancer Centers.
Brussels, November 25th, 2024: The European Alliance for Personalised Medicine (EAPM) has released its most recent academic publication entitled, Optimizing the Role of Clinical Cancer Centers and Comprehensive Cancer Centers in Advancing Cancer Care Across Europe.
The academic piece was developed through collaboration with EU experts and institutions during the first half of 2024. The report outlines strategic actions to improve cancer care, aligned with the EU Cancer Mission’s 13 Recommendations and Joint Actions.
These critical steps are aimed to create a unified, patient-centered cancer care framework in Europe. By fostering collaboration, addressing disparities, and investing in technology, the EU can advance the Cancer Mission’s objectives, ensuring high-quality, innovative care is accessible to all.
Some of the key policy recommendations are listed below.
Fostering Collaboration: The EU should enhance partnerships between Clinical Cancer Centers (CCCs) and Comprehensive Cancer Centers (CCCs). Comprehensive Centers focus on research, while Clinical Centers provide routine care. Greater collaboration will better integrate innovation into everyday care.
Investing in Technology: Prioritizing funding for advanced diagnostics, artificial intelligence (AI), and telemedicine will improve cancer detection and treatment. Comprehensive Centers can lead the adoption of these technologies, ensuring equitable access across Europe.
Reducing Care Disparities: Significant inequalities persist in cancer care. Establishing regional hubs to deliver diagnostics and treatment in underserved areas, coupled with financial incentives, can ensure equitable care.
Enhancing Research and Workforce Training: The EU must focus on translational research to turn laboratory breakthroughs into practical solutions. Training programs across Europe will prepare healthcare professionals to deliver cutting-edge, personalized care.
Harmonizing Quality Standards: Standardized benchmarks for treatment outcomes and diagnostics are crucial to ensuring consistent cancer care. These metrics will enable centers to improve performance and patient outcomes.
Increasing Access to Clinical Trials: Simplified regulations and better infrastructure will allow more Clinical Centers to participate in trials, expanding patient access to innovative treatments.
Psychosocial support should become a standard component of treatment.
Enhancing Data Sharing: Interoperable data systems are essential for better coordination and decision-making. Real-time data sharing will improve patient tracking and support evidence-based strategies across the EU.”
