The new ESMO Clinical Practice Guideline is now available
European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) shared on LinkedIn:
“The new ESMO Clinical Practice Guideline (CPG) for communication and support of patients and caregivers in chronic Cancer Care is now available.
Communication in Cancer Care is associated with medical and psychosocial outcomes, including distress or satisfaction for both patients and clinicians.
This CPG provides an up-to-date approach to Doctor Patient Communication, covering the following topics:
- Communication issues that apply to Oncology Consultations in general, consisting of recommendations regarding the structure of the interview, obtaining and providing information, explaining options and making decisions, responding to patients’ and caregivers’ emotions, relationship building and support, supporting hope, interprofessional communications, chronic cancer and survivorship, meeting with family and significant others.
- Background issues of doctor-patient communication, including the psychology of patient and clinician, biological, social, and spiritual dimensions of illness, as well as setting of the consultation and the broader Health Care context.
- Communication training for oncologists.
- Research on communication in cancer care.”
