George Vlachogiannis: Cutting cancer mortality in Canada by 50% by 2050 – can we get there?

George Vlachogiannis, Executive Editor of Cancer Control at Sage Publishing, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent paper by Keaton Banik et al. published in Cancer Control:

“Cutting cancer mortality in Canada by 50% by 2050 – can we get there?

Keaton Banik, Dr Darren Brenner, and colleagues from the University of Calgary explore the feasibility of a Cancer Moonshot initiative in Canada, aiming to halve cancer mortality by 2050. Using advanced microsimulation models they project that current prevention and screening efforts could reduce cancer deaths in Canada by about 33%.

However, a 16-17% ‘lunar gap’ remains, requiring additional breakthroughs in cancer risk prevention, early detection, novel treatments, and clinical innovations in order to achieve this ambitious goal.”
