City of Hope: A Beacon of Hope in Cancer Treatment and Research
Modern Healthcare recently recognised City of Hope Orange County among the Best Places to Work in US.
City of Hope is a renowned private, non-profit clinical research center, hospital, and graduate school located in Duarte, California.
Established in 1913, it has evolved significantly from its origins as a sanatorium for tuberculosis patients to a comprehensive medical center dedicated to the prevention, treatment, and cure of cancer and other life-threatening diseases.
Spanning 110 acres, City of Hope’s main campus features state-of-the-art facilities and a network of clinical practice locations throughout Southern California, including satellite offices in Monrovia and Irwindale. The institution is also supported by regional fundraising offices across the United States, enabling it to continue its vital work in research and patient care.
City of Hope is best known for its cancer treatment programs and has been designated as a Comprehensive Cancer Center by the National Cancer Institute.
Over the years, it has consistently ranked among the nation’s best cancer hospitals by U.S. News & World Report, reflecting its commitment to excellence in patient care and innovative research.
The center has a rich history of medical breakthroughs, including playing a critical role in the development of synthetic human insulin in 1978.
This pioneering work highlights City of Hope’s dedication to translational medicine, where discoveries in the lab are transformed into effective treatments for patients. As of 2016, the center has performed over 13,000 hematopoietic stem cell transplants, with patient outcomes that consistently exceed national averages, underscoring its expertise in this complex area of care.
City of Hope’s institutional mission extends beyond cancer treatment to include diseases such as diabetes and HIV/AIDS. Its comprehensive programs address various cancers—brain, breast, gastrointestinal, gynecologic, thoracic, and urologic—as well as leukemia and lymphoma. This multidisciplinary approach ensures that patients receive holistic care tailored to their specific needs.
Under the leadership of President and CEO Robert W. Stone and Provost and Chief Scientific Officer Steven T. Rosen, City of Hope continues to expand its research initiatives.
The center has been involved in numerous clinical trials sponsored by industrial partners and the National Cancer Institute, contributing significantly to the advancement of cancer therapies and improving patient outcomes.
In recent years, City of Hope has broadened its impact by acquiring Cancer Treatment Centers of America, further enhancing its ability to provide exceptional care to more patients.
As it looks to the future, City of Hope remains steadfast in its mission to alleviate suffering and advance medical science, solidifying its position as a leader in cancer research and treatment.
