“The COVID-19 pandemic led to a significant drop in cancer cases in 2020 because of interruptions in screening and diagnostic services.

A recent study looked at data from 22 cancer registries and found that while some cancers, like pancreatic cancer, almost returned to pre-pandemic levels in 2021, others, like thyroid cancer, had mixed recovery rates depending on the stage. Metastatic breast cancer showed significantly higher observed rates than expected.

These results highlight the ongoing impact of the pandemic on healthcare services and show the need for continuous monitoring and adjustments in cancer care. Making sure we have strong screening and diagnostic services is critical to address the long-term effects on cancer outcomes.”
