One – Third of Indian Cancer Patients are over 60

Aruni Ghose shared a post by HCG (CARE) Centre for Academic Research on LinkedIn, adding:

“My Mentor Vanita Noronha, the Indian Geriatric Oncology stalwart is revolutionising the Cancer care in older patients Continuum both in India and the LMIC landscape.

This is a must read from both Geries and Global Oncology perspective as well as Population Health – Nicolò Matteo, Luca Battisti, Ravindran Kanesvaran, Giuseppe Banna, Akash Maniam.

Not only do we see an ageing population but also a massive cohort way greater than many HICs combined – Assessments and Services need to be both COST and TIME Efficient.

Call for BIDIRECTIONAL relationships between HICs and LMICs.”

“GIST – a window to the world of Oncology

A comprehensive study across 17 Indian institutions has uncovered important insights about cancer in older adults.

Published in Cancer Epidemiology, the research shows that 36% of cancer patients are over 60, with men more affected than women. Head and neck cancers lead at 19.6%, followed by breast, genitourinary, lung, and liver cancers.

This data is crucial for healthcare planning as India’s population ages, highlighting the need for specialized geriatric oncology care.

For medical professionals, it guides clinical practices and research focus. For the public, it underscores the importance of cancer awareness and screening for older adults.

As India faces an aging population, addressing cancer in seniors becomes a key public health priority. Read all about it here.”
