Bob Li, Senior Vice President and Global Head of Medical Affairs, Oncology at AstraZeneca, shared on LinkedIn:
“I still remember the faces of the patients I treated early in my career as a thoracic oncologist. Back then, our options were limited. Having to tell a patient that we had run out of treatments was the hardest part of the job.
Arriving at ESMO in Madrid this week, I am reminded of exactly how far we have come.
The sheer volume of innovation on display is striking. With more than 100 scientific abstracts supported by AstraZeneca, including four Presidential Symposia presentations and three simultaneous publications in The New England Journal of Medicine, we are seeing incredible strides in precision medicine.
Yet the most profound discussions I had this week centered on a persistent challenge: ensuring patients everywhere can access care that reflects the latest advances.
Innovation cannot deliver its full potential in isolation. It takes connected healthcare systems, collaborative networks and the capabilities to bring advances into everyday clinical practice.
Democratizing cancer care is deeply personal to me.
It means building connected cancer networks and expanding precision diagnostics so that a patient in a rural town or remote community has the exact same chance at survival as someone living next to a premier research hospital.
We have the scientific tools to change the trajectory of this disease. Our job now is to build the global partnerships and cancer networks that ensure many more patients can benefit from them.”
