The SNSF Starting Grants scheme enables talented researchers to develop their own independent research programs in Switzerland. It supports career progression by funding both project costs and, where necessary, the applicant’s own salary, allowing them to lead a research group. Projects in any discipline—including oncology, cancer biology, translational, epidemiology, or prevention—are eligible if conducted in Switzerland.
Eligibility Criteria:
Applicants must:
- Hold a PhD, MD or equivalent doctoral qualification
- Have several years of postdoctoral experience but not yet established as senior independent researchers
- Meet the “Swiss-link” requirement (appointment at a Swiss institution)
- Propose a self-directed research project and leadership plan
There are no citizenship restrictions; both Swiss and international researchers are eligible if based in Switzerland.
Funding Details:
- Up to CHF 1 million project funding over up to 5 years
- Optional salary funding (assistant professorship level) if applicant lacks secured position
- Additional earmarked budget to support outstanding female researchers
