
NCI Mentored Clinical Scientist Research Career Development Award
The NCI Mentored Clinical Scientist Research Career Development Award (K08) provides support and protected time for postdoctoral scholars, clinical fellows, and junior faculty clinician-scientists (including instructors and assistant professors) to engage in intensive mentored research and career development in all areas of cancer research. The K08 is intended for individuals with clinical doctoral degrees, who are committed to pursuing a career as a clinician-scientist. Applications will not be considered if the candidate has already been promoted to associate professor or an equivalent position at the time of the award.
Eligibility
You ARE eligible to submit a proposal if you:
- Are a clinician with active U.S. licensure
- Hold a clinical doctoral degree (M.D., D.O., D.D.S., D.M.D., etc., or Ph.D. in a clinical discipline such as clinical psychology or nursing)
- Are a U.S. citizen, non-citizen national, or have been lawfully admitted for permanent residence
- Are not a current or former PD/PI of a major NIH grant (R01, P01, P50, etc.)
Surgeon-scientists may request reduced effort (not below 6 person-months or 50%) with proper justification.
Grant Term and Budget
- Duration: 3 to 5 years (not renewable)
- PI Salary: Based on effort, up to the legislative salary cap + fringe benefits
- Research Development Support: Up to 50,000 USD per year for tuition/fees, supplies, travel, and statistical support
- F&A Costs: 8%
- Ancillary Support: Not allowed for mentors or administrative personnel

- Surgeon-scientists requesting less than 75% effort must justify this in the candidate’s plan, mentor’s letter, and institutional commitment letter.

- Cycle 1: New – February 12, Resubmission – March 12, Start – December
- Cycle 2: New – June 12, Resubmission – July 12, Start – April
- Cycle 3: New – October 12, Resubmission – November 12, Start – July
- Applications are due by 5:00 p.m. local time. If the deadline falls on a weekend or federal holiday, the deadline is extended to the next business day.
Review and Selection Process
- Applications are reviewed for completeness and compliance by CSR and NCI.
- Subcommittee J evaluates proposals based on review criteria in the Program Announcement.
- A second-level review is conducted by the National Cancer Advisory Board (NCAB).
