The NCI Predoctoral to Postdoctoral Fellow Transition Award
The NCI Predoctoral to Postdoctoral Fellow Transition Award (F99/K00) Award supports outstanding PhD or research doctoral candidates in completing their dissertation (F99 phase) and transitioning into a cancer-focused postdoctoral research position (K00 phase). The award offers up to 6 years of support to facilitate this transition and promote a successful independent research career.
Eligibility
- Predoctoral students in their 3rd or 4th year of a health-related PhD program
- Must be nominated by their institution
- Must not have accepted a postdoctoral position or completed PhD requirements at the time of award
- No citizenship restrictions; applicants must have a valid U.S. visa that permits research activity throughout the award
- F99 phase: Full-time effort (40 hrs/week)
- K00 phase: Minimum 75% professional effort
Grant Term and Budget
- F99 Phase (up to 2 years):
- Stipend: Same as F31 NRSA (currently 28,224 USD)
- Tuition/Fees: 60% of combined cost, up to 16,000 USD/year
- Institutional Allowance: Includes 1,500 USD for travel to NCI conference
- K00 Phase (up to 4 years):
- Salary: 65,000 USD (Year 1), 69,000 USD (Year 2), 72,000 USD (Year 3), 76,000 USD (Year 4)
- Tuition/Fees: Up to 4,500 USD/year
- Research Support: Up to 3,000 USD/year, plus 1,500 USD travel to NCI conference
- Indirect Costs: 8% of modified total direct costs

- Next Deadline: November 19, 5:00 p.m. local time
- One submission date per fiscal year
- If due date falls on weekend/holiday, deadline extends to next business day

- Must include institutional nomination letter
- Applications must have two Specific Aims:
- Aim 1: Dissertation Research
- Aim 2: Postdoctoral Research Direction
K00 Transition
- Requires a secured postdoctoral position
- Transition application includes updated aims, mentor statements, budget, environment, visa info (if applicable), and research plan updates
