
NCI Cancer Research Education Grants Program
The Cancer Research Education Grants Program (R25) supports innovative, evidence-based educational activities that enhance the training of biomedical, behavioral, and clinical researchers in the field of cancer. There are three distinct funding opportunities within this program, each targeting a different educational goal: curriculum development, short-term courses for skill-building, and hands-on cancer research experiences. These initiatives aim to strengthen the pipeline of researchers equipped to tackle cancer-related challenges through high-impact education.
Eligibility Criteria
- Principal Investigator must be at or above the rank of Associate Professor (or equivalent)
- U.S. citizens and non-citizens are eligible if employed by an eligible U.S. institution
- R25 projects may include international participants, with justification
- R25 programs must be education-focused and cannot support formal training or degree programs
- Institutional and participant eligibility requirements vary by NOFO (see below)
Funding Opportunities and Budget Details
- PAR-23-278 (Curriculum or Methods Development):
- Up to 150,000 USD direct costs per year for up to 2 years
- Focus: Development of new educational curricula or methods
- Cannot fund direct teaching of curriculum
- PAR-23-276 (Courses for Skills Development):
- Up to 300,000 USD direct costs per year for up to 5 years
- Focus: Annual offering of state-of-the-art, cancer-focused skills development courses
- PAR-23-277 (Research Experiences):
- Up to 300,000 USD direct costs per year for up to 5 years
- Focus: 8–15 week full-time research experiences, plus additional part-time continuation (up to 12 months)
- Can include complementary activities (journal clubs, seminars, etc.) up to 20% of time
Application Deadlines
- January 25, May 25, September 25 (annually)
- Applications are due by 5:00 PM local time
- If the date falls on a weekend/holiday, submission is due the next business day
- Earliest start dates: April, July, or December depending on cycle
