The NCI Worta McCaskill-Stevens Career Development Award for Community Oncology and Prevention Research (K12) supports institutional career development programs that prepare newly trained clinicians for independent research careers in community oncology, cancer prevention, screening, treatment, control, and cancer care delivery.
The program places particular emphasis on preparing clinician-scientists to improve participation and outcomes for populations underrepresented in cancer clinical research. New K12 programs may receive up to $50,000 in direct costs during the first planning year and up to $750,000 annually thereafter, for a total project period of up to five years. (Grants.gov)
Eligibility Criteria
- Eligible applicants include qualifying U.S. public and private higher education institutions, nonprofit organizations, government entities, tribal organizations, and community-based organizations.
- Foreign/non-U.S. organizations cannot apply, although eligible foreign components are permitted.
- The Program Director/Principal Investigator should be an established investigator capable of providing scientific and administrative leadership.
- Scholars must be U.S. citizens, noncitizen nationals, or permanent residents at the time of appointment.
- Scholars should not yet have achieved research independence and normally must dedicate at least 75% professional effort to research and career development.
- U.S.-licensed surgeon-scientists may request a reduced commitment of at least 50% effort, with appropriate justification.
Funding Details
- New K12 programs – Year 1: Up to $50,000 in direct costs for planning, development, advertising, and Scholar recruitment.
- Years 2–5: Up to $750,000 in direct costs annually.
- Renewal applications: Up to $750,000 annually for each of 5 years.
- Maximum project duration: 5 years.
- Scholar salary support may be requested up to $110,000 annually, plus applicable fringe benefits.
- Each Scholar may receive up to $30,000 annually in research and career development support.

- Next and final application deadline: February 18, 2027.
- Applications are due by 5:00 PM local time of the applicant organization.
- Earliest project start: December 2027.
- NOFO expiration: February 19, 2027.
