The Medical Research Council (MRC) Investigator Research Grant supports ambitious, investigator-led research across the full spectrum of human health, including cancer. The scheme empowers experienced researchers to transition to or reinforce their independent career by funding creative, high-impact discoveries and translation programs. Cancer-focused projects—from basic discovery to intervention studies—are welcomed. The scheme encourages interdisciplinary collaboration and supports teams that bring together complementary expertise.
Eligibility Criteria:
Applicants must:
- Hold an academic or clinical research position at an eligible UK research organization
- Possess sufficient track record and autonomy to lead a research program
- Propose a project relevant to the MRC remit (including oncology)
- Have institutional support and infrastructure in place
There are no citizenship restrictions, but at least part of the program must be UK-based.
Funding Details:
- Supports flexible research programs (no fixed cap)
- Covers staff, consumables, equipment, technology access, data generation, and collaboration costs
- Project duration up to 5 years
- Includes potential for interdisciplinary or multi-site UK collaboration
