
AGA-R. Robert & Sally Funderburg Research Award in Gastric Cancer
The AGA Research Foundation is accepting applications for the 2025 R. Robert & Sally Funderburg Research Award in Gastric Cancer. This prestigious award provides $100,000 over two years to an established investigator pioneering innovative research in gastric cancer pathobiology, prevention, diagnosis, or treatment.
Who is eligible?
Applicants must:

Hold an MD, PhD, or equivalent degree

Be established as an independent investigator in gastric biology
-
MDs: ≥7 years post-clinical training (as of April 2026)
-
PhDs: ≥7 years post-degree (as of April 2026)

Hold a full-time faculty or equivalent position at a North American institution (U.S., Canada, or Mexico)

Be an AGA member at the time of application
Researchers from underrepresented backgrounds and physician-scientists are encouraged to apply.
Funding at a glance:

100,000 total USD (50,000 USD per year for 2 years)

May support salaries (PI and research team), supplies, animals, equipment, and biostatistical support

Indirect costs and travel are not permitted
Research focus:
The proposed project must center on gastric cancer. Priority areas include:

Gastric mucosal cell biology

Helicobacter pylori and inflammation as precancerous factors

Genetics and oncogenes of gastric malignancies

Epidemiology and etiology of gastric cancer

Clinical research and diagnosis/treatment approaches

Research filling evidence gaps identified in AGA’s Gastric Intestinal Metaplasia Surveillance Guidelines
