Cancer Research UK Early Detection and Diagnosis Primer Award 2026

Cancer Research UK Early Detection and Diagnosis Primer Award 2026

Due Date: 09/17/2026

The Cancer Research UK Early Detection and Diagnosis Primer Award provides up to £100,000 for up to 12 months to support innovative and potentially high-risk ideas in cancer early detection and diagnosis. The scheme is intended to generate preliminary evidence, test novel approaches, establish collaborations, and create a foundation for larger future research projects.

The award is particularly suited to researchers testing unconventional or interdisciplinary approaches and is open to applicants from fields extending beyond traditional cancer research, including engineering, physics, chemistry, mathematics, statistics, informatics, and computer and data science. Previous cancer research experience is not required, provided there is a clear connection to cancer early detection or diagnosis and a pathway toward future clinical or population impact.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicants may be scientists, clinicians, or healthcare professionals.
  • Researchers at all career stages are eligible.
  • Early-career researchers applying as lead or joint lead applicants are strongly encouraged to include an established researcher as a co-applicant for mentorship.
  • Previous Cancer Research UK funding does not prevent an applicant from applying.
  • Research teams can involve investigators from multiple UK institutions.
  • Researchers receiving core funding from a CRUK institute, including the Francis Crick Institute, may in certain circumstances participate as a joint lead with an investigator outside the institute, subject to prior discussion with CRUK.
  • Part-time and flexible working arrangements may be considered with host-institution approval and prior discussion with CRUK.
