AGA Pilot Research Award

The American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) Research Foundation is currently accepting applications for its 2025 Pilot Research Award, designed to fuel promising early-stage or novel projects in the fields of gastroenterology and hepatology. This award empowers both early-career and established investigators to pursue innovative directions in digestive health research.

Who is eligible?

Applicants must hold an MD, PhD, or equivalent degree and a full-time faculty (or equivalent) position at a North American institution (U.S., Canada, or Mexico). AGA membership is required at the time of application. Research proposals can be in basic, translational, or clinical domains relevant to digestive disorders.

Early-career applicants must have:

  • Completed clinical training (MDs) or earned their PhD within 7 years of the award start date (April 1, 2026)

  • A mentor and a supporting letter from their division chief or department chair

Established investigators must demonstrate how the project represents a new line of research.

Funding at a glance:

  • 40,000 USD for one year

  • 14 awards available

  • Funds may be used for PI and staff salaries, lab supplies, equipment, and biostatistical support

  • Indirect costs, mentor salaries, and travel expenses are not allowed

Research focus:

The proposal must be relevant to gastroenterology or hepatology. Projects should generate pilot data to support future applications to larger funders like NIH.

Key deadlines:

  • Application Deadline: September 18, 2025

  • Award Notification: By January 31, 2026

  • Funding Begins: April 1, 2026
