American Lung Association Catalyst Research Award

The American Lung Association Catalyst Research Award supports outstanding early-career investigators pursuing research into the mechanisms of lung disease and general lung biology. This mentored award provides funding to advance innovative, multidisciplinary research that has the potential to improve the understanding, prevention, and treatment of lung disease.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Applicants must hold a relevant doctoral degree (PhD, DSc, MD, DO, or equivalent).

  • Must be affiliated with a U.S.-based, non-profit, academic, or research institution.

  • Open to early-career faculty and postdoctoral or medical fellows pursuing at least two years of mentored lung research training.

  • MD or DO applicants must have completed two years of research training post-degree before the award start date.

  • Applicants cannot hold senior or established investigator status (e.g., NIH R01, VA Merit Review).

  • Must be authorized to work in the United States.

  • Must have a qualified mentor with demonstrated expertise in lung disease research.

Funding Details:

  • Amount: 50,000 USD per year, renewable for a second year upon satisfactory progress.

  • Duration: Up to 2 years (July 1, 2026 – June 30, 2028).

  • No more than 75% of the budget may support salary and fringe benefits.

  • No more than 30% may be used for permanent equipment.

  • Indirect costs are not permitted.

  • Research topics may include prevention, causes, and management of lung diseases such as asthma, COPD, lung cancer, and tuberculosis.
