CPRIT Recruitment of Rising Stars
Funds Texas institutions to recruit exceptional “Rising Stars” (typically late assistant/early associate professor level or equivalent) whose work shows outstanding merit and strong potential for high-impact cancer research. Awards aim to expand Texas’s cancer research capacity across basic, translational, clinical, and population science priority areas.
Eligibility Criteria:
-
Applicant must be a Texas-based not-for-profit institution that conducts research (companies are ineligible).
-
PI must be nominated by the president, provost, VP for research, or appropriate dean; one institution may nominate a given PI.
-
At submission, PI holds a doctoral degree and an appointment at assistant or associate professor (tenure-track/tenured) or equivalent rank in academia/research, industry, government, or a private foundation; PI must not reside in Texas at submission and must reside in Texas for the duration if awarded; ≥70% effort must be devoted to research.
-
No co-investigators; collaborators may be outside Texas but cannot receive CPRIT funds. Accepting a position at the recruiting institution before the Scientific Review Council meets renders the PI ineligible.
-
Institutional commitment must equal or exceed 50% of the proposed CPRIT award for the full duration.
Funding Details:
-
Up to USD 4,000,000 total over up to 5 years; non-renewable. Indirect costs capped at 5% of the total award (≈5.263% of direct). FY26 individual salary cap: USD 225,000.
-
Allowable: PI salary support; extraordinary first-year equipment with strong justification; travel for up to 2 project staff to CPRIT’s conference. Not allowable: construction/renovation.
-
Disbursement timing is flexible annually; carryover beyond 5 years only in extraordinary cases.
-
