
CPRIT High-Impact/High-Risk Research Awards
Supports short-term, high-risk projects with the potential for major advances in cancer research. Designed to generate feasibility data for future peer-reviewed funding; proposals may span basic, translational, clinical, population, or survivorship research.
Eligibility Criteria:

Applicant must be a Texas-based entity; not-for-profit institutions/organizations and public or private companies are eligible.

Principal Investigator (PI) holds a doctoral degree (e.g., MD, PhD, DDS, DMD, DrPH, DO, DVM), resides in Texas during the research, and holds an appropriate appointment with facilities to conduct the work.

Single-PI mechanism; Multi-PIs are not allowed. One Coinvestigator is permitted and must reside in Texas; collaborators may be outside Texas but cannot receive CPRIT funds.

PI must commit at least 5% effort throughout the award; a PI may submit only one new or resubmission application in this cycle and may serve on no more than three active CPRIT Academic Research grants (MIRA project leaders count as PI).

Institutional submission limits apply: up to 5 applications per academic research institution and 1 per public or private company.

Resubmission policy: one resubmission allowed (more than one is not permitted).
Funding Details:

Budget: up to USD 250,000 total for up to 24 months (direct + indirect). Renewals are not accepted for this mechanism.

Allowable: salary/benefits (FY26 individual salary cap USD 225,000), research supplies, equipment (≥ USD 10,000 requires approval), clinical/patient care costs.

Not allowable: construction/renovation; travel to scientific meetings other than CPRIT’s Biennial Conference (costs to attend CPRIT’s conference are permitted).

Indirect costs: capped at 5% of the total award (≈ 5.263% of direct costs).

Matching funds: prior to disbursement, the recipient must demonstrate available funds equal to one-half of CPRIT funding at contract execution and annually thereafter.
