
NMRC Clinician Scientist–Individual Research Grant (CS-IRG)
The NMRC Clinician Scientist–Individual Research Grant (CS-IRG) provides up to S$1.95 million over 3 years (or up to 5 years for patient-recruitment studies) to established clinician scientists in Singapore public institutions, supporting basic, translational, or clinical research aligned with national health priorities.
Eligibility Criteria:

Principal Investigator:
-
Clinically qualified (MD/MBBS/BDS) with postgraduate clinical training or allied-health professionals/nurses/pharmacists conducting clinically relevant research.

Non-medical epidemiologists or biostatisticians with human-clinical research focus are considered case-by-case; wet-lab-only applicants are ineligible.

PhD (or equivalent) required.

Holds a primary appointment and salary at a Singapore public hospital, AMC, PHI, or public university.

Independent PI status with a track record of competitive funding or substantial publications.

Employed ≥ 9 months/year locally; agrees to ≥ 6 months’ residency per grant year.

No outstanding reports from prior national grants.

For patient-based studies: PI or Co-I must be SMC-registered or demonstrate patient access via SMC-registered collaborator.

A*STAR CS scholars (NSS MBBS-PhD/MD-PhD) with joint AMC/PHI appointment may apply through host institution.

Research Themes: Open to all areas; for tie-breakers, priority given to cancers, cardiovascular, eye, infection, mental health, metabolic/endocrine, and neurological diseases.
Funding Details:

Quantum: Up to S$1.95 million per project (inclusive of up to 30% indirect costs^) for 3 years; projects with prospective patient recruitment may extend to 5 years under the same cap.

Allowable Costs: Personnel, consumables, equipment, patient-care costs, and indirect costs (up to 30%; not applicable to scholarship budgets).

^Indirect costs are excluded for research scholarship budgets.
