
Graduate Studies Endowment Fund (GSEF) Awards
The Department of Medicine’s Graduate Studies Endowment Fund (GSEF) and the Provost’s PhD Enhancement Fund (PPEF) provide competitive awards to support full-time master’s and PhD students with supervisors appointed in the Department. Awards require a 50 % matching contribution and are typically open to trainees in the Eliot Philipson Clinician-Scientist Training Program (CSTP), although other qualified students may apply when CSTP slots are unfilled.
Eligibility Criteria:

Full-time enrollment in a U of T MSc or PhD program with a supervisor in the Department of Medicine.

Supervisor must hold a Department of Medicine faculty appointment (verify via the online directory).

Secure a 50 % funding match (e.g., $2,000 match for a $4,000 request).

Clarence Henry Trelford Clinician-Scientist Award in Diabetes ($6,000 total; match $2,000) for diabetes-focused CSTP trainees.

GlaxoSmithKline Clinician-Scientist Fellowship for CSTP trainees (merit- and need-based).

Bram Appel Graduate Student Endowment Fund in Cardiology Award for Cardiology Division graduate students (merit prioritized by supervisory site).

Division-specific awards in Neurology, Nephrology, Emergency Medicine (Sunnybrook, St. Michael’s, UHN), Endocrinology, Respirology, Gastroenterology, and Thrombosis.
