
The Ann C. Mertens Childhood Cancer Survivor Study Career Development Award
This award—open to early career investigators and trainees—provides up to $20,000 (plus indirect costs) over one year to develop and complete an initial research study within the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study (CCSS). Funds support analyses of existing CCSS data or pilot studies that lay the groundwork for future external grant applications. Awardees gain access to CCSS Working Groups, data resources, methodological support, and mentorship to launch a career in childhood cancer survivorship research.
Eligibility Criteria:

Junior Faculty Award:
-
Assistant Professor (or lower) at funding start.

No prior role as PI on a CCSS Publications Committee–approved project.

Trainee Award:

Same as above, but specifically for trainees.

General:

Open to candidates worldwide in any discipline related to survivorship research (medicine, nursing, psychology, epidemiology, biostatistics, basic science, etc.).

Applicants must not have been PI on a CCSS project before; former co-investigators are eligible.

Must secure:

Mentor letter assuring protected research time.

Mentor’s NIH-format biosketch.

For non-institutional mentors, an additional supervisor/department-head letter.

CCSS Working Group Chair approval of Intent (AOI) prior to full application.

Funding Details:

Amount: Up to $20,000 + indirect costs for 1 year (both Junior Faculty and Trainee awards).

Use of Funds: Salary support, protected research time, and travel (conference presentation, visits to St. Jude CCSS Coordinating Center, CCSS Investigators’ Meeting, or mentor’s institution).

Milestones: Submission of abstracts/manuscripts or external grant proposals; two 1-page progress reports at 6 and 12 months; presentation at the CCSS Investigators’ Meeting.
