Pathway to Independence Award (K99/R00)

The NIH K99/R00 Award provides up to five years of support in two phases—a 1–2-year mentored postdoctoral “K99” phase and a 3-year “R00” independent research phase—enabling emerging scientists to transition swiftly into tenure-track or equivalent faculty positions.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Citizenship: U.S. citizen, non-citizen national, or permanent resident.

  • Career Stage: Postdoctoral scientist with ≤4 years of postdoctoral research experience at the time of application.

  • Degree: Terminal clinical or research doctorate (e.g., PhD, MD, DDS, DVM, ScD, PharmD).

  • Current Position: In a mentored postdoctoral training appointment—no prior faculty or equivalent independent appointments.

  • Mission Fit: Research must align with the interests of participating NIH Institutes/Centers (check NOFO PA-24-194 and consult [email protected]).

Funding Details:

  • Mentored Phase (K99):

    • Duration: 1–2 years

    • Salary: Up to 75,000 USD/year plus fringe

    • Research Support: Up to 25,000 USD/year

    • Effort: Minimum 75%

  • Independent Phase (R00):

    • Duration: Up to 3 years

    • Total Costs: Up to 249,000 USD/year (includes salary, research, and up to $50,000 equipment)

    • Effort: Minimum 75%

  • Transition: R00 activation contingent on securing a qualifying independent faculty position and NIGMS approval.

Deadlines:

Standard due dates each year by 5:00 PM local time in NIH Commons:

  • February 12 (new) / March 12 (resubmission)

  • June 12 (new) / July 12 (resubmission)

  • October 12 (new) / November 12 (resubmission)
