
CPRIT Recruitment of Rising Stars Awar
The Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) offers the Rising Stars Award to help Texas institutions recruit world-class cancer researchers—providing up to $4 million over five years (direct + indirect costs) to establish and grow an innovative independent research program in basic, translational, clinical, or population-based cancer research.
Eligibility Criteria:

Nominating Institution: Any Texas-based nonprofit academic or research institution.

Principal Investigator:
-
Holds a doctoral degree (MD, PhD, DDS, DMD, DO, DrPH, DVM, etc.).

Currently at or above assistant/associate professor level (or equivalent) outside Texas.

Not yet relocated to Texas at submission.

Commits ≥ 70% effort to cancer research (minimal clinical/teaching/administrative duties).

Institutional Match: The recruiting institution must commit funds (salary, start-up, research support, etc.) equal to at least 50% of the total CPRIT award over five years.

Other Requirements: No co-investigators; no prior faculty appointment in Texas before review; no conflicts of interest with CPRIT oversight members; tobacco-free workplace policy; compliance with federal funding eligibility.
Funding Details:

Total Amount: Up to $4 million over five years (includes up to 5% indirect costs).

Use of Funds:

PI salary support (capped at $225,000 /year base, FY 26).

Research program costs (supplies, core‐facility usage, travel for two staff to CPRIT conference).

One-time equipment purchase in Year 1 (with strong justification).

Duration & Disbursement: Flexible annual allocations within the five-year period; unspent funds generally lapse unless a no‐cost extension is justified.

Restrictions: No construction/renovation; no funding for co-investigators; must demonstrate matching funds prior to contract execution.
Deadline:
Rolling cycle between June 23, 2025 and June 22, 2026. For each cycle, applications must be submitted by 11:59 PM CT on the 20th calendar day (if the 20th is a weekend, by the following Monday). See CPRIT’s schedule for exact cycle open/close dates and potential award dates.
