
MRC Infections and Immunity – Research Grant
The Medical Research Council (MRC) invites applications for research projects that advance the understanding of infectious diseases, immunity, inflammation, and immune-mediated conditions. This opportunity supports innovative and impactful research with the potential to improve human health through discoveries in immunology, infectious disease biology, and host-pathogen interactions.
Eligibility Criteria:

Applicant must be employed by a UK-based organisation eligible for MRC funding
-
Must lead and be actively engaged in the proposed work
-
International researchers can participate as project co-leads (international)
-
Project must focus on infections and immunity
-
Collaborations with MRC Units in The Gambia or Uganda are eligible to lead
Research Areas Supported:

Human pathogens (bacterial, viral, fungal, parasitic)
-
Immunology and inflammation
-
Immune-mediated diseases and multimorbidity
-
Vaccinology and vaccine development
-
Antimicrobial resistance
-
Biomarkers, diagnostics, and therapeutics

Co-infection and chronic infection
-
Epidemiology and transmission
Funding Details:
-
No cap on budget; must be appropriate and justified
-
80% of full economic cost (FEC) covered by MRC
-
100% of permitted exceptions and costs for DAC-listed international collaborators
-
Co-leads from high-income countries, India, and China may request up to 30% of total project cost
-
Eligible costs include salaries, staff support, equipment, consumables, travel, data management, and public engagement
Project Duration:
-
Up to 5 years (typical projects last 3–4 years)
-
Short projects (<2 years) must justify proof-of-concept/high-risk focus
-
Project start expected 1–6 months after funding decision
