MRC Molecular and Cellular Medicine – Research Grant

The Medical Research Council (MRC) invites applications for research grants supporting fundamental, interdisciplinary, or translational research in the area of molecular and cellular medicine. This funding supports ambitious and high-quality projects that investigate the biological mechanisms underpinning human health and disease. Projects may involve single or multiple research teams and are expected to contribute new insights or tools for future biomedical advances.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Applicant must be based at a UK research organisation eligible for MRC funding

  • Must lead the project and be actively engaged in the work

  • International researchers can join as project co-leads (international), not as project leads

  • Applications must focus on the molecular and cellular medicine remit

  • MRC Units in The Gambia or Uganda are eligible for lead roles

Research Areas Supported:

  • Cell biology, structural biology, and biophysics

  • Genetics, genomics, and epigenetics

  • Developmental and stem cell biology (excluding neurobiology)

  • Molecular haematology and regenerative medicine

  • Cancer research

  • Medical bioinformatics, systems biology, biostatistics

  • Toxicology and environmental exposures

  • Pharmacology and chemical biology

  • Advanced therapies and technology development (e.g., nanotech, synthetic biology)

Funding Details:

  • No cap on budget; must be appropriate and justified

  • MRC funds 80% of full economic cost (FEC)

  • 100% of costs covered for exceptions and for DAC-listed international collaborators

  • International co-lead costs from high-income countries, India or China must be <30% of total

  • Supports research staff, PI/co-PI salary contributions, consumables, travel, equipment (>£25K), public engagement, and NHS research costs

Project Duration:

  • Up to 5 years (typically 3–4 years)

  • Shorter projects (<2 years) must justify proof-of-concept or high-risk work

  • Project start date should be within 1–6 months of funding decision

Deadline:

4 September 2025 at 4:00 PM UK time
