
MRC Infections and Immunity – New Investigator Grant
The Medical Research Council (MRC) invites early-career researchers to apply for a New Investigator Grant in the area of infections and immunity. This grant supports the transition to independence by funding research that deepens understanding of human infectious diseases and immune-related disorders. Applicants must demonstrate leadership potential, a compelling research plan, and alignment with the Infections and Immunity Board (IIB) remit.
Eligibility Criteria:

Must be hosted by an MRC-eligible UK research organisation

Applicants should be in the transition to independence stage
-
Cannot have previously held a substantial grant (typically ≥3 years and salary for staff)
-
Cannot have held a transition award or applied more than twice for an MRC new investigator grant
-
Can be non-clinical or clinically active
-
International researchers can be included as project co-leads, not as lead applicants

Applicants from MRC Unit The Gambia or MRC/UVRI Uganda are eligible

Human pathogens (bacterial, viral, fungal, parasitic)

Immunology and inflammation

Immune-mediated disease and multimorbidity

Vaccines and vaccinology

Antimicrobial resistance

Chronic infections and co-infections

Epidemiology and transmission

Biomarkers, diagnostics, and therapeutics
Funding Details:
-
No cap on total budget; typical full economic cost under £1 million
-
MRC funds 80% of full economic cost and 100% of permitted exceptions
-
Supports up to 50% of applicant’s salary
-
Includes staffing, travel, consumables, equipment, international co-lead costs (capped at 30% for high-income countries), and public engagement
-
Does not fund clinical treatment trials, PhD studentships, or bridging grants
Project Duration:

Typically 3 years (longer durations must be justified)
-
Projects must start 1–6 months after funding decision
