
MRC Molecular and Cellular Medicine – New Investigator Grant
The Medical Research Council (MRC) invites early-career researchers to apply for a New Investigator Grant to support research in molecular and cellular medicine and foster transition to research independence. This award is designed for those who have not yet led a research team or held a substantial independent grant. Proposals should aim to generate new knowledge within the MCMB remit and demonstrate leadership potential and a clear pathway to independence.
Eligibility Criteria:

Applicants must be hosted by a UK-based research organisation eligible for MRC funding

Must demonstrate they are at the transition to independence stage (not yet an established independent researcher)

Cannot have previously held a substantial grant (typically ≥3 years and salary for additional staff)

Cannot have applied more than twice for an MRC New Investigator Grant or hold a similar transition award

Project co-leads (UK/international), specialists, and team roles are allowed, but must not compromise applicant’s leadership

International co-leads may be included but cannot act as lead applicants

Applicants from MRC Unit The Gambia or MRC/UVRI Uganda may be eligible
Funding Details:
-
No cap on funding; typical full economic cost is under £1 million

MRC funds 80% of full economic cost (FEC) and 100% of permitted exceptions
-
Duration: Usually 3 years (may be longer if justified)

Covers up to 50% of applicant’s salary
-
Includes staff, travel, consumables, equipment, public involvement, data costs, and support for international collaboration (up to 30% of total budget for non-DAC countries)

Excludes: randomised trials, PhD studentships, publication costs, or bridging funds
