
MRC Molecular and Cellular Medicine Programme Grant
The Medical Research Council (MRC) invites applications for large-scale, long-term programme grants to support research in molecular and cellular medicine. This funding is intended for programmes comprising coordinated, interrelated projects that aim to enhance understanding of molecular, cellular, and biological systems relevant to human health. Proposals should demonstrate strong scientific rationale and align with MRC’s strategic goals, particularly in fields such as cancer, structural biology, regenerative medicine, stem cell biology, pharmacology, and medical bioinformatics.
Eligibility Criteria:

Applicants must be employed by a UK research organisation eligible for MRC funding

Must have a significant track record in securing research funding and delivering impactful outputs

Application must fall within molecular and cellular medicine remit

Only invited applicants who successfully complete the pre-application stage may submit a full proposal

International researchers may be project co-leads but cannot act as project leads

Applicants cannot currently hold or lead another MRC programme grant unless exceptional approval is granted
Funding Details:

No upper funding limit; most proposals request £1 million or more
-
MRC funds up to 80% of the full economic cost (FEC) and 100% of permitted exceptions

Duration: Up to 5 years

Funding covers salaries, staff, equipment, consumables, data management, international collaborations, and public involvement

International partner costs (from high-income countries, China, and India) must not exceed 30% of total request
-
Not eligible for: randomised clinical trials, PhD studentships, publication fees, or bridging funds
