The Medical Research Council (MRC) invites applications for long-term, large-scale programme grants to support coordinated groups of interrelated projects addressing significant research questions in infections and immunity. These programmes aim to generate transformative insights into human infectious diseases, immune-mediated conditions, and inflammation. Successful proposals will align with MRC strategic priorities and demonstrate high scientific ambition and innovation.
Eligibility Criteria:

Applicants must be based at a UK research organisation eligible for MRC funding

Must have a substantial track record of securing funding and delivering impactful research

Programme must fall within the remit of infections and immunity

Only invited applicants who have successfully passed the pre-application stage may submit a full application

International co-leads may be included, but not as project leads

Programme leads from MRC institutes or who already hold an active programme grant are generally not eligible
Funding Details:

No funding cap; most applicants request £1 million or more

MRC funds up to 80% of the full economic cost (FEC), and 100% of permitted exceptions

Duration: Up to 5 years

Funds can cover salaries, research and technical staff, equipment, consumables, infrastructure, travel, NHS research costs, and international collaboration (subject to limits)

Does not fund: Randomised clinical trials, PhD studentships, or publication costs
