Cancer Research Trust NZ: Special Purpose Grants

The Cancer Research Trust New Zealand is offering Special Purpose Grants of up to 80,000 NZD (+GST) over two years to support cancer research support initiatives across biomedical, clinical, epidemiological, and psychosocial domains. These grants are designed for individuals and organisations working in cancer care or support services, not just for hypothesis-driven research but for building the infrastructure and tools that underpin impactful cancer research in New Zealand.

Key Features:

  • Award: Up to 80,000 NZD + GST

  • Duration: Up to 2 years

  • Scope: Initiatives to strengthen cancer research capability, such as databases, biobanking, Māori-led initiatives, and institutional research capacity

  • Location: Projects must be based in New Zealand

Eligibility & Focus:

  • One application as Principal Investigator per person; may also be a co-investigator on one other proposal

  • Suitable for those in cancer support roles and research-adjacent initiatives

  • Hypothesis-driven research should apply under the Research Project Grant scheme

Eligible Budget Items:

  • Salary support for soft-funded research staff (e.g., postdocs, RAs, technicians)

  • Small equipment (with justification and quotes)

  • Project-essential travel

  • Retrospective publication costs (with proof of submission)

Ineligible Costs:

  • Permanent academic salary buy-outs

  • Overheads, capital expenses, and conference travel

  • Student stipends or postgraduate fees

Application Requirements:

  • 4-page project proposal (PDF upload)

  • NZ standard CV (PDF)

  • Ethics approvals (or pending status noted)

  • Quotes, collaboration letters, and signed Letters of Commitment

  • Applications are submitted via the Cancer Research Trust grants portal

Emphasis on Māori Health Advancement:

Every proposal is assessed for its contribution to Māori health equity, using the Health Research Council’s four-domain model:

  • Relationships

  • Significance

  • Research Team

  • Research Characteristics

This may include prioritizing Māori-led biobanking, partnerships with iwi or Māori health providers, or strategic dissemination to Māori communities.

Review Process:

  • Initial peer review by local and international experts

  • Top 50% of applications advance to review by the Assessment Committee

  • Consideration of local impact and Māori equity

  • Constructive feedback provided to all applicants via the grants portal
