Cancer Research Trust NZ: Research Project Grants

The Cancer Research Trust New Zealand is offering Research Project Grants of up to 80,000 NZD (+GST) over a maximum of two years to support high-quality cancer research with the potential for real-world impact. This scheme funds projects across the cancer care continuum—from prevention and early detection to diagnosis, treatment, survivorship, and palliative care.

Key Details:

  • Award Amount: Up to 80,000 NZD + GST

  • Duration: Up to 2 years

  • Scope: Biomedical, clinical, psychosocial, epidemiology, public health, health services research

  • Goal: Incubate proof-of-concept studies that can attract further funding

  • Location: Projects must be based in New Zealand

Eligibility & Structure:

  • Only one application per Principal Investigator is allowed per round.

  • Applicants can also be listed as Associate Investigator on one other application.

  • Must be affiliated with a New Zealand academic or cancer care institution.

  • Proposals should be written clearly for both expert and general reviewers.

Funding Can Cover:

  • Salaries for postdocs, technicians, research assistants (not tenured staff)

  • Working expenses and travel essential to the project

  • Publication fees (reimbursed post-submission)

  • Small research equipment (with justification)

  • Ethics approvals and regulatory requirements must be addressed

Not Funded:

  • Overheads, student stipends, capital costs, conferences, or training course attendance

  • Salary buy-outs for permanent academic staff

Māori Health Advancement:

The Trust strongly emphasizes contributions to Māori health equity in line with te Tiriti o Waitangi. All applicants are expected to demonstrate meaningful engagement across the HRC’s four Māori advancement domains: Relationships, Significance, Research Team, and Research Characteristics.

Application Review Process:

  • Peer-reviewed by local and international experts

  • Top 50% reviewed by the Assessment Committee

  • Additional considerations: NZ relevance, scientific quality, Māori health outcomes

  • Feedback provided to unsuccessful applicants for skill development
