
Cancer Research Trust NZ: Research Project Grants
The Cancer Research Trust New Zealand is offering Research Project Grants of up to 80,000 NZD (+GST) over a maximum of two years to support high-quality cancer research with the potential for real-world impact. This scheme funds projects across the cancer care continuum—from prevention and early detection to diagnosis, treatment, survivorship, and palliative care.

Scope: Biomedical, clinical, psychosocial, epidemiology, public health, health services research

Goal: Incubate proof-of-concept studies that can attract further funding

Location: Projects must be based in New Zealand
Eligibility & Structure:

Only one application per Principal Investigator is allowed per round.

Applicants can also be listed as Associate Investigator on one other application.

Must be affiliated with a New Zealand academic or cancer care institution.

Proposals should be written clearly for both expert and general reviewers.
Funding Can Cover:

Salaries for postdocs, technicians, research assistants (not tenured staff)
-
Working expenses and travel essential to the project

Publication fees (reimbursed post-submission)

Small research equipment (with justification)

Ethics approvals and regulatory requirements must be addressed
Not Funded:

Overheads, student stipends, capital costs, conferences, or training course attendance

Salary buy-outs for permanent academic staff
Māori Health Advancement:
The Trust strongly emphasizes contributions to Māori health equity in line with te Tiriti o Waitangi. All applicants are expected to demonstrate meaningful engagement across the HRC’s four Māori advancement domains: Relationships, Significance, Research Team, and Research Characteristics.
